The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This involved trying to remove his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. His successor was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, Brasília.

The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
